Mariah Okenwa, LMFT "small steps. Soft strength. deep healing"

“Small steps. Soft strength. Deep healing”

That’s the heartbeat of my work.

I believe therapy should feel like putting on your favorite sweater—comforting, warm, and familiar—but also a place where you feel free to grow and stretch in new ways.

Life can be messy, confusing, and downright exhausting at times. If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply ready for something to change, I’m here to walk that path with you—one soft, strong step at a time.

Clients often tell me they appreciate my honest, compassionate, and down-to-earth approach—sprinkled with a bit of humor, because sometimes a good laugh can be just as healing as a breakthrough moment.

I’m not here to “fix” you (because you’re not broken), but to help you reconnect with your strengths, your values, and the version of yourself you may have lost touch with.

Why I Became a Therapist

My path to becoming a therapist started with my own experiences. I often felt unseen and unheard during tough seasons. That journey shaped my passion for helping others feel understood and empowered. I draw from my faith to offer hope and encouragement when life feels overwhelming—but whether you bring faith, doubt, or somewhere in between, your story is welcome here.

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with specialized training in trauma-informed care, parenting support, and relational healing. While the title “Marriage and Family” often leads people to assume I only work with couples, my training focuses on the whole person in context—meaning I look at how your relationships, culture, community, past experiences, and current environment all shape your emotional and mental wellbeing. I support individuals, couples, and families through life transitions, grief, abuse recovery, identity work, and rebuilding connection after disconnection.

In addition, I provide secure virtual therapy across New York State, making support more accessible for those balancing busy lives or limited transportation. My services include individual, couples, and family therapy—with a special focus on high-risk families, maternal mental health, and relationship repair.

To make therapy more affordable, I offer flexible session packages and financing through CareCredit for those who qualify. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, faith and identity questions, parenting struggles, or just trying to feel like yourself again—I’m here to help you take the next soft, strong step forward.

Who I Work With

As a Black therapist, I hold space for the impact of race, faith, culture, and generational trauma—because healing should never ask you to leave your identity at the door.

How I Approach Therapy

I also integrate systemic and brief therapy models—including IFS, Structural and Strategic Family Therapy, SFBT, and Behavioral Activation—tailoring each session to your unique story and goals.
